Last Sip

The last sip from your beer
Lingers on your lips
If I think hard enough
I can still taste it’s sweetness
Something prophetic in your eyes
A joy unbound that sits comfortably
Inside my heart
That warm, soft, liquid feeling
It swirls and twirls
Until it permeates everything
That last little look
The one with the sinister yet angelic
Sparkle in your eye
I knew
I know it’s over
That ruminating sadness
The twisting loneliness
That contorts into bitter longing
Has made a friend
A wonderful, genuine, beautiful
Goddamn brilliant work of art
I close my eyes to think about the night
The soft smile that penetrated
Through my walls as if they didn’t exist
God, how easy it was to let you in
The last sip from your beer
Lingers in your lips
If I think hard enough
If I dream long enough
I can still taste its sweetness
