He's A Good Boy

He’s a good boy.
Hair black as coal, eyes a rich amber.
Stretch your legs out and he’ll lay under them.
Walk out of the room to go change the laundry and he’ll follow close behind.
Stay in the bathroom too long and he’ll whine outside the door, hoping you haven’t fallen in.
He listens when you speak and obeys when you call.
He’ll guard the house from those treacherous squirrels
And chase off any troublesome cats that invade the yard.
You won’t hear him bark at other dogs
Instead he’ll curiously sniff and inspect them.
No doubt he will recognize you from a mile away and run to meet you half way.
His powerful tail wags with all the excitement that his big heart can muster.
There’s gray mixed in with the black, but he wears it proudly.
There’s more effort in getting up, but he does so happily.
Quietly, he’ll make his way to you and put his face right in yours.
With no malice in his eyes or judgment in his heart.
He’ll press his head against you and cuddle up as close as he possibly can.
Telling you to rest from your day
Reminding you that you are loved.
He’s a good boy.
